Israeli TV star makes grab for Netanyahu voters

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A TV personality-turned-politician whose centrist party could be a key player in Israel's parliament after elections made a bid for right-wing voters on Tuesday with a call for Palestinians to accept some Israeli West Bank settlements.

Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid (There is a Future) party gave his first speech on Israel's relations with the Palestinians at a settlement in the occupied West Bank, a move commentators said was calculated to appeal to voters from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party.

Lapid said that only granting Palestinians their own state could end the conflict but that "The Palestinians will have to recognize that reality has changed since 1967 and the settlement blocs will stay within Israeli borders."

Polls show Yesh Atid, formed this year by Lapid, formerly anchor of a popular television news show, winning up to 15 of parliament's 120 seats in the January 22 vote.

Most polls predict right-wing and religious parties closely allied with Netanyahu will win a solid majority in the election. But the prime minister drew criticism from some in Likud when he announced last week he was merging the party with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beitenu.

While some polls have shown Netanyahu's merged party may win up to 42 seats, as much as they jointly hold today, commentators say the move could backfire with Lieberman's hardline views driving voters away.

Speaking at the Ariel settlement bloc, Lapid accused Netanyahu of failing to revive peace negotiations that broke down in 2010 in a dispute over settlement construction. Yesh Atid will not join a government that does not return to talks, he said.

Israel has sent mixed signals in the past over whether the Ariel enclave, with a population of 17,000, would be included among major settlement blocs it says will remain in Israeli hands permanently after any peace deal.

The Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with east Jerusalem as its capital. Israel captured those territories in a 1967 war. The Palestinians say that Israeli settlements deny them a viable contiguous state.

In another nod to the right, Lapid said Jerusalem was non-negotiable. "Jerusalem will remain under Israeli sovereignty and will not be divided," Lapid said. Israel annexed east Jerusalem in a move that was not recognized internationally.

Lapid challenged Netanyahu's stance on Iran, saying Israel should rely on international pressure to curb what Israel and the West believe is Iran's drive toward nuclear weapons. The Netanyahu government has said in the past it could use force.

Tehran says its nuclear efforts are peaceful.

Meanwhile, two wild cards could threaten Netanyahu's lead. Former centrist prime minister Ehud Olmert and his ex-foreign minister Tzipi Livni are mulling comebacks and are expected to announce in the coming weeks whether they are joining the race.

Collier issues apology after blaming South Africa for Pietersen saga ? Cricket News Update

Chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board David Collier has issued an apology after having accused the South African players for having goaded batsman Kevin Pietersen into sending the controversial text messages that led to his axing from the national squad.

The prolonged and convoluted spat between Pietersen and the ECB was sparked earlier this year by the batsman?s abrupt retirement from international limited-overs cricket, which gave rise to questions regarding his commitment to national duties.

The relationship between Pietersen and the ECB deteriorated further during South Africa?s tour of England, when the 32-year-old was revealed to have sent text messages, of a questionable nature, to members of the rival Proteas team. The startling development led the ECB to drop Pietersen from the squad for the third and final Test, as well as the 15-man line-up for the ICC World Twenty20 2012.

While both parties recently managed to reach a resolution, with the ECB deciding to put Pietersen through a ?reintegration? programme before he could rejoin the team, Collier opened the can of worms yet again in a recent interview with the BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme.

With the board having been provided Pietersen?s reassurance that the messages had contained neither tactical advice, nor derogatory comments about then skipper Andrew Strauss, as had been alleged, Collier claimed during the interview that the messages had been sent as replies to goading from the Proteas players, who had used provocative text messages as a tactic to disturb the Poms during the series.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the South African Cricketers' Association (SACA) immediately rose to the defence, with CSA?s acting chief executive Jacques Faul claiming he was disappointed with the unfounded accusations, while the SACA demanded that Collier apologise for having questioned the ethics and values of the Proteas players. A meeting between the CSA and ECB appears to have achieved the desired results, as revealed by a joint statement issued by both boards.

?CSA and ECB have discussed the events which led to Kevin Pietersen's non-selection for the third test,? read the statement.

?Cricket South Africa has made clear to ECB that the electronic messages were not part of any initiative or plan to undermine the England team or players. ECB has unreservedly accepted that assurance and wishes to reiterate that it has no issue at all with CSA - or the Proteas players - on this matter and appreciates that the South African and England players follow the highest ethical standards of behaviour.?

The release went on to state that while CSA and the ECB did not agree on the finer details of the Pietersen saga, CSA and the SACA had accepted Collier?s apology, and both boards now regarded the matter as closed.

Achieve Successful Online Marketing Using These Pieces Of Advice ...

You will have a successful online business if you do not use efficient Web marketing techniques. It is unavoidable in today?s market. Whether your business fails or is successful may depend on your Online marketing campaign. In the following article, you will find several ways in which Internet promotion can enhance the success of your business.

As you begin your online marketing, you must also consider advertising. When you market your niche, you will see how much of a success it will create. This helps you gain customers that you may not have gotten using other methods.

When marketing online it is important to try every avenue to maximize profits. If you do not follow trends you will not attract customers and they will doubt you. If you want to gain respect and see more sales, you need to show visitors that you are up-to-date in your field.

TIP! It is essential that you find the right places to advertise your business online. For instance, if you are trying to sell baseball cards you should focus on sites that have visitors that are interested in at least baseball.

Being constantly aware of your competition is a smart Website marketing strategy. Research what your competition is doing and the things that are helping them as well as hurting them. Sometimes your competitors can be your very best teachers. This can give you insight as to what to do, and what not to do.

Use banner ads that stand out. If you can make your banner ads look different from the norm, you will find that more people will click on it.

TIP! It is common knowledge that an authority position in a business generates respect. Let them know you?re the boss and this will add a lot of credibility when selling a product.

Make the most of proper HTML tagging techniques. Tags are used to highlight your key content. Search engine spiders take notice of what your HTML tags emphasize. You should make it a point, then, to emphasize your most important keywords.

A blog can bring your site higher traffic. Be sure to provide regular updates of fresh content on your blog. People are more likely to go to a site where they know there?s always new content.

It is important to not only gain your clients? trust, but keep it. Your marketing materials should not only be engaging and attractive but they should also be indisputably supported by facts. Present client testimonials, test results, and expert endorsements that could be proven if needed.

TIP! Place a chat box or open forum on your business website. They need to feel like your site is a place to hang and chat with other members of the club rather then just a place to visit when they are ready to buy something.

Every image that appears on your website should have its own caption. The search engines scan keywords in the captions to determine whether or not the keywords searched will land the seeker effectively on your page. Your traffic and search engine ranking will increase if you make your site keyword rich, including the image captions and post titles.

A FAQ (frequently asked questions) page is an essential tool for keeping your website?s visitors happy and well-informed. This gives quick answers to most questions pertaining to your site and business, while simplifying the process of your customers getting the help they are looking for. Customers are much more likely to buy from a business that addresses their informational needs and questions, and not just a product.

On great way to encourage sales is to offer a special incentive at the start. You can offer free shipping for those who order within the next 10 minutes or free gift wrapping; any kind of added incentive will do. Make sure that the end date is noticeable in order create urgency.

TIP! To compete with today?s type of internet marketing, you need to open a social media profile on popular sites. Don?t spam people though; the media sites have been policing spam recently and have even taken some people to court.

Your site should be very clear so that any links that you post are easily identifiable. This will keep your audience engaged and they won?t have to dig around for links.

Personalized descriptions full of emotion and praise are the best for your products as it will cause potential customers to form a sense of attachment to an item and be more likely to purchase it. This helps you concentrate on building brand recognition. This emotional connection comes from words that describe the good results your product will have in vivid terms.

A lot of people won?t believe the information you put in your ads. This is due to the fact that many people have been exposed to numerous instances of false advertising. As a consequence, you must provide proof for what you state on your site. You might include reviews, testimonials, before-and-after photos and test reports, for instance. Never make claims that you are unable to prove. Make sure to treat your audience as the informed and intelligent people they are. Don?t take advantage of people. You will get a great reputation and gain customers to do business with for a long time.

TIP! Interview legitimate authority figures in your niche. You will need to have them sign a legal document authorizing you to use their testimony.

Most successful businesses use Internet marketing. If your have a business that is based online, you must focus on marketing. By including these tips in business plan, you will maintain high visibility on the Internet and increase the profitability of your business

On wrinkles, grey hair, 'pertness' and the privatisation of the body as ...

Just reading a lovely, thoughtful post ?On being a babe? or not? by Australia author Susan Johnson (My 100 Lovers, etc) over at her blog, prompted by some comments by Pamela Stephenson on last night?s Q&A.

Johnson talks about the many and complex decisions we make these days in response to our ever-changing bodies, and the pressure to look young:

?Look, no way around it: I am dying. I am on the train that is going in only one direction, and what dyeing your hair or Botoxing your face or getting a surgeon to pull up the skin of your sagging jaw is trying to do is pull the emergency stop cord.

But, hey, folks, the train aint going to stop! It?s going one way, and what the grey hair and the sagging and the wrinkles are telling you is that your time with dark hair and no sags and no wrinkles is over. Move over! Let the unlined youth climb aboard! Unclutch your hands! Let life pass over you, let the trajectory of birth to death continue on its way.?

Mourn your unblemished, smooth skin. Mourn your glossy curls. Yes, it?s a grief, no way around it: it?s a grief because it?s about loss. Loss feels like all the other losses that have come before, all the losses like Russian dolls packed inside you.?

Thinking about this?I thought I?d repost a piece I wrote a few years ago, and which was?first published in The Age (Opinion, 27 Oct 2006, p19) under the title:???Are Wrinkles Really All that Ugly??? Here it is:

*

In parts of Papua New Guinea there is said to be a dreaded curse that a witch may put on an enemy to make her breasts stay pert and upright, like a young girl?s, forever.

However, for the customers of the beauty surgeons, portrayed on Jonathan Holmes? documentary ?Buyer of Beauty Beware? (Four Corners, ABC-TV, 23 October), pertness and youth is the dream and the promise. As Dr Josef Goldbaum neatly explains, ?We don?t have to accept what nature throws at us.?

For Meredith Jones, who interviewed plastic surgery patients and their surgeons for her PhD and [2008]?book, cosmetic surgery is just one aspect of contemporary ?Makeover Culture?. Within an ethic that approves working on the self, improvement is regarded as labour rather than vanity, and a commodity for which one shops (and if wise, shops around).

For in the modern, privatised notion of the body ? where the ?civilised thrust? (as an anthropologist once put it) has replaced the ?primitive droop? ? body and mind are separate realms. Flesh is ?nature?, passive and inert, and thus is not only open to being manipulated and controlled by a sovereign mind, but is in need of such control.

As such, our bodies ? like our houses and land ? have become a personal capital, to be invested in, worked and improved. It?s all about managing your assets, and having botox injections in your twenties and thirties becomes a kind of cosmetic superannuation, to protect you from the less bountiful experience of old age. Surely something every good citizen should consider and, if they can afford, take out.

However with the body seen as an ongoing project and investment, there can also be a recurring and sometimes permanent sense of incompleteness.

We keep adding to it ? clothing, hair dye, accessories, push up bras, tattoos, piercings, more clothes, newer clothes, less clothes, muscle building. And we keep taking away: dieting, liposuction, depilation. (Peering into the fridge late at night: if only I can find the right thing to put into it? Maybe this chocolate ice-cream?)

Indeed for all our manipulation, modification and adornment of bodies in the name of individualism, greater pleasure, aesthetic delight, choice, personal freedom and power, we seem to be in the midst of an incredible epidemic of body loathing.

And while, as Holmes points out in his documentary, the surveys show the overwhelming majority of recipients of cosmetic procedures such as breast enhancement are delighted with their results, what of those (usually around ten percent) who aren?t?

It might be fine if they were merely not so happy, or indifferent. But a quick look at websites such as Silicone Holocaust (with a picture gallery not for the faint-hearted) suggests the kind of long-term physical and emotional devastation for this minority that should make all of us alarmed.

It?s also worth noting that these surveys, conducted by the plastic surgery industry, usually only have a short follow-up period: months, rather than years. On the home makeover programs, almost everyone is ecstatic when they walk through that door and see their new improved and redesigned space ? the glossy paint and clean fabrics, the shiny neat surfaces and bold colours. But I often wonder what it?s like to live long-term with these quick fixes.

Sometimes, I?m sure it?s wonderful. Life-changing. And I?m certainly not immune to the seductive lure of modern uncluttered style ? or of slim bodies and smooth skin.

But if I had the money to furnish my house any way I wanted, what would I pick? And if I called in a makeover team, what might I lose?

I love my house, and my house loves me. And while there are things I would like to improve, I?d actually like to keep the current style in which a creative use of old and found things figures strongly. I?ve learnt to find a peaceful balance between beauty, practicality and comfort ? even to see beauty within functionality. I?ve learnt to find an aesthetic that values difference and variation; one that easily accommodates change and use; that recognises the difference between looking new (or young) and looking good.

If it is possible to cultivate a home furnishing aesthetic that appreciates the rich effects of time and brings both peace and pleasure ? one where the patina of age, the scratches and marks of usage are a part of the beauty and story of an object ? can it really be so impossible to do this with regard to our bodies?

If leather can become more beloved, and more sensuous, with age, why not skin?

As the beautiful Italian actress Anna Magnani once said to a photographer: ?Please don?t retouch my wrinkles, it took me so long to earn them.?

Citi's New CEO Michael Corbat Speaks - Business Insider

President and COO John P. Havens also stepped down. ?

Michael Corbat, a former Harvard football player who previously headed Citi's?Europe, Middle East and Africa business, was?named the new CEO. ?

One question that came up is whether he's ready for the CEO role or needs to get up to speed.?

"I think I'm fortunate in a couple of respects. ?I've been here at the firm for 29-and-a-half years and I have also been fortunate in those years I've spent time in probably most every major division. ?I've spent time abroad. I think I've got a pretty good understanding of where and how the firm works and so I think I come to the table with the benefit of that," he said.

"Contrary to speculation, no strategic, regulatory or operating issues precipitated his resignation. Nor is there another shoe to drop and certainly there is no issue of conduct or ethics.?Vikram is a person of impeccable integrity," Citi chairman Michael O'Neill said on a conference call with analysts.?

We were on the call and have included highlights below. ?

Here we go.?

"Vikram chose to submit his resignation and the board accepted it," he said.

"Contrary to speculation, no strategic, regulatory or operating issues precipitated his resignation. Nor is there another shoe to drop and certainly there is no issue of conduct or ethics.?Vikram is a person of impeccable integrity.?

"He successfully lead Citi through one of the greatest recessions in seventy-five years, re-capitalized the bank and executed strategy based on a return to the basics of banking. The accomplishments have been essential to making Citi a stronger global enterprise..."

He pointed out that the board elected Michael Corbat unanimously. ?"We believe he has the ideal experience and a proven track record."?

"The board remains confident in the strategy of our firm including the strenght of our core franchise and the wind down of legacy assets."?

"We owe a debt of graditude to Virkam and John Havens. ?They lead our firm through an extremely challenging time in our history. And under Vikram's leadership, we re-capitalized the balance sheet and built the financial strength you saw in our quarterly results yesterday. ?We adopted a focused strategy of core businesses in Citicorp that play to our unique historic strengths as a global bank that will provide strong growth and attractive returns over the long-term...And we've identified non-core assets we have shed."

"Today's changes do not reflect any desire to alter the strategic direction of Citi," he says, adding, "which we believe to be the right one." ?

What's more is Chief Risk Officer Brian Leach and CFO John Gerspach are both committed to staying at Citi, he says. ?

"I look forward to taking on the challenge of what Vikram started," he says.

Corbat responds, "I can't speak necessarily to what he's going to do differently, but I can tell you what I'm going to do and what I'm going to focus on."?

"So first thing is this a very important time of year for the company. We are in budget and strategic planning season and we have a budget that I need to work together with several business heads and deliver by year end. ?We are in CCAR process. We've got a document to deliver by Jan. 5th. ?I think the focus is really on operating performance and a real refined focus around that.?

"I think we have the right footprint and the right resources." ?

Regulators: "I will tell you that it's critical for this firm, and all firms in banking, to have strong relationships withour regulators. I think we do. As in all things, I think things can always be improved. We will focus on that. ?It's an important part of being in our industry. ?I have every confidence that Mike will have strong relationships. He already has some very good ones built."

He is "very well viewed" by regulators, O'Neill says of Corbat.?

"From a regulatory perspective, I think we're in good shape and are likely to get better."

Compensation: "Until we are clear, we're not going to say very much..We have made a statement that says we are talking to our investors. ?Spent a lot of time doing that. I think we know what the issues are. We are addressing them. Come proxy season, I think you will have a complete understanding of the approach we are taking."?

"We feel quite strongly that the strategy we have is the right one." Corbat said.

Shorr says he thinks people are pleased with the quarter. ?"We are all scratching our heads saying 'What just happened?."

"What happened was Vikram submitted his resignation and we accepted it," O'Neill responded.

"What also happened is the company has been engaged in a two-year process to make sure if something like this happened we had a strong process and knew who should succeed the CEO. Mike has been at the center of that process and as a consequence when this occurred he was very well positioned to take this action so as I said the board is delighted that Mike has been willing to take this challenge on and I think he'll do a very good job." ?

"I think I'm fortunate in a couple of respects. ?I've been here at the firm for 29-and-a-half years. ?And I have also been fortunate in those years I've spent time in probably most every major division. ?I've spent time abroad. I think I've got a pretty good understanding of where and how the firm works and so I think I come to the table with the benefit of that." ?

"But as always I'm going to be a key learner. I think these processes that we are going into are going to be a great way to do that with the budget and CCAR [capital levels].?I feel good about where I am and where we are."?

Mayo says just yesterday they were asking Pandit about long-term strategy on the earnings call. ?He asked what were some of the steps behind the scenes.?

On the whole pay speculation thing, O'Neill says that the answer is "categorically no."

Mayo also asked why Pandit didn't stay on for three months for a transition period. ?

O'Neill reponded with "To some degree this is actually fortuitious." He said that there are three critical processes, the budget, the three-year play and submitting a CCAR plan. ?"The new CEO needs to be part of that process." ?

O'Neill says "absolutely."?

"We looked at internal and external candidates...We spent a lot of time."?

Corbat says he's been here over 29 years and has exposure to many of Citi's businesses. ?

"I feel like I've got a grasp around the firm the way it operates and how it operates," he said. ?"I feel like I've been well prepared for this." ?

O'Neill jumped in and said of course Corbat knew he was a candidate. ?"This doesn't come as a complete shock."?

"He knows he's been under consideration for some time." ?

Former Dominican Republic President Leonel Fern?ndez Joins ...

Leaders address the county's regional development in a global context during National Hispanic Heritage Month

Purchase, N.Y. (October 4, 2012) ? The Manhattanville College School of Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) yesterday welcomed Leonel Fern?ndez, former President of the Dominican Republic, to their campus for a landmark roundtable discussion, ?Regional Development in a Global Context.? Business leaders of various disciplines came together to discuss Westchester County?s strategic advantages, challenges, and opportunities in the global marketplace. The roundtable also addressed the needs of Westchester?s growing Hispanic population, a leading contributor to local workforce growth and spending.? The roundtable was moderated by Matt Sampson, Anchor, News 12 Westchester/Hudson Valley.

Held in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), the lunchtime roundtable served as an opportunity for the GPS at Manhattanville to reaffirm its commitment to Westchester County?s growth and prosperity by continuing its efforts to bridge countries and cultures. Participants discussed Westchester?s regional development in a global context from both an economic and business perspective.

"President Fern?ndez's visit to our campus and participation in this landmark roundtable is a testament to the strides that Manhattanville College is making in global education," said Dr. Anthony Davidson, Dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at Manhattanville College. "We feel it is important to recognize the contributions of our citizens of Hispanic heritage during National Hispanic Heritage Month. By bringing together business leaders who truly understand Westchester?s complex landscape, we also hope to pinpoint the strategic advantages of our county in the global marketplace.?

President Fern?ndez and Dr. Davidson were joined by Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of the Business Council of Westchester; Larry Gottlieb, Westchester County?s Director of Economic Development; Fannie Aleman-Lansch, President of the Westchester Hispanic Chamber?of Commerce; Marissa Brett, Executive Director of Economic Development at the Westchester County Association; Natasha Caputo, Director of Westchester County Tourism and Film; Louis Scamardella, Assistant Director of the New York State Small Business Development Center; Stuart Marwell, CEO of Curtis? Instruments; and Robert Weisz, CEO of RPW Group, among others.

During his twelve years in office, President Fern?ndez focused on technological and infrastructural development as well as macroeconomic and monetary stability. He launched the country?s first metro system and was recently honored as ?Statesman of the Year? by the Canadian Council of the Americas.

?President Fern?ndez brings a global perspective, keen insight into educational needs, and an intimate knowledge of the Hispanic community ? one of the most vital economic groups in Westchester County and the United States today,? said Davidson.

The Dominican Republic has the ninth largest economy in Latin American and the second largest in the Caribbean and Central American region. Despite the recession, the Dominican Republic boasted a 5.28% average growth rate between 2008 and 2011. The country?s gross domestic product increased 4.5% in 2011 with record revenues in the mining sector, national export sales, and tourism.

The private, invitation-only roundtable took questions via live tweets that were simulcast on GPS?s new events page (http://www.mville.edu/news-a-events/news/event-news/4045-roundtable.html). At edge of black hole, a star Albert Einstein would have loved

Scientists have found a star orbiting very close to the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. It could help scientists give Einstein's brilliance one of its sternest tests yet.

Astronomers have found a star whipping around an enormous black hole at the center of the Milky Way once every 11.5 years, potentially providing them with a cosmic laboratory to test Albert Einstein's most famous theory and to learn more about how such huge black holes evolve.

No known star orbits a supermassive black hole faster. Though it is among a group of stars discovered at the galactic center, it is only the second with an orbital period of less than 20 years. The other orbits once every 16 years.

By looking at precision measurements of these two stars when they are nearest the black hole, scientists hope to see if Einstein's general theory of relativity still holds true under the most intense gravitational field the galaxy can deliver.

Moreover, the stellar pair also are expected to help solve puzzles surrounding? black holes in galactic centers and how the black holes affect a galaxy's evolution, notes Andrea Ghez, an astronomer at the University of California at Los Angeles and the leader of the team reporting the discovery in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

"It is the tango" of these two stars "that will reveal the true geometry of space and time near a black hole for the first time," she said in a prepared statement.

According to general relativity, gravity results from mass. That mass?? a planet, star, or black hole ? warps space and time in its immediate vicinity, a bit like the depression a medicine ball can form when it's placed on a trampoline. This is called a gravitational "well."

A black hole is an object with so much mass ? it has warped space and time around it so much ? that not even light has enough energy to escape its gravitational well. Stellar-mass black holes, which form from the collapse and explosion of stars at least 10 times more massive than the sun, tip the cosmic scales at between three solar masses and tens of solar masses. The supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way, by contrast, boasts 4 million times the sun's mass.

If a sun-like star were to approach within about 93 million miles of the Milky Way's central black hole, it would in essence become a spaghetti-like streamer of gas destined to vanish into the black hole, says Avi Loeb, chairman of the astronomy department at Harvard University.

The stars that zip around the Milky Way's black hole can reach speeds of up to 22 million miles an hour ? a pace that would cover a trip from New York to Los Angeles in less than a second.

The short-period stars among them represent a bonanza for several reasons. First, one complete orbit occurs within a span of time that falls well within the length of a career in astronomy.

Long-missing Colo. Marine buried with full honors

(AP) ? For 37 years, Delouise Guerra never knew for certain what happened to the young man she called her baby brother, an 18-year-old Marine from Colorado who was missing and presumed dead after a helicopter crash on the other side of the world.

The Defense Department told Guerra two months ago it had positively identified the remains of the man she called her baby brother, Pfc. James Jacques. The Colorado Marine was killed during the rescue of the crew of the S.S. Mayaguez, an American cargo ship seized by Cambodia's Khmer Rouge two days earlier on May 12, 1975.

"Oh my God, it's a relief to know that they have found his final remains," Guerra said. "It's just an honor to bring him home."

Jacques will be buried with full military honors at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver on Tuesday on what would have been his 56th birthday.

Jacques ? pronounced "HAW-kas" ? was among hundreds of Marines and airmen sent to storm Koh Tang Island, about 60 miles off the coast of Cambodia, to rescue the Mayaguez crew. A helicopter carrying Jacques and 25 others crashed into the surf off Koh Tang Island amid unexpectedly heavy fire from Cambodian fighters.

Half the men on the helicopter were rescued, but the other 13 were declared missing, including Jacques.

All 39 crew Mayaguez members were released safely by Cambodia, but some 40 U.S. servicemen were killed.

Jacques' identification dog tags were found in 1992, but his remains weren't positively identified until this year, said Air Force Maj. Carie Parker of the Defense Prisoner of War and Missing Personnel Office.

A Cambodian had turned over the remains to a U.S.-Cambodian search team in 2007. Newly available DNA technology allowed researchers to confirm the identity this year.

Guerra got the news in a letter from the Marines that arrived at her Denver home on Aug. 14. Her son Bob was with her.

"I started crying because I knew it was about my brother," she said. "We were crying, we jumped, we hollered."

Guerra, now 71, was 15 when Jacques was born.

"He was a very loving, very caring ? well, he was my baby brother," she said. "He was just a really good person."

Jacques grew up in La Junta, a small town about 140 miles southeast of Denver. He joined the Marines in October 1974, shortly after his 18th birthday. His family was apprehensive but didn't try to dissuade him, Guerra said.

"It was something he wanted to do," Guerra said. "He wanted to go and serve his country and do his best."

He died just seven months after enlisting.

Twelve of the 13 missing servicemen are now confirmed to have died, Parker said. She said she could not discuss the 13th because an investigation is ongoing.

The Mayaguez operation is considered the last U.S. military engagement in Southeast Asia after the long and bloody war in Vietnam. The last U.S. combat troops left South Vietnam in 1973, and the South Vietnamese capital fell to North Vietnam on April 30, 1975, just two weeks before the Mayaguez engagement.

'Sopranos' creator Chase premieres 'Not Fade Away'

This film image released by Paramount Vantage shows James Gandolfini, left, with writer-director David Chase during the filming of "Not Fade Away." (AP) ? David Chase has returned with his first work since "The Sopranos" went black.

The director premiered his debut film, "Not Fade Away," at the New York Film Festival on Friday ahead of its red carpet gala Saturday. The '60s rock 'n' roll drama is his long-awaited follow-up to the venerated HBO mob drama he created and produced for six seasons.

The film is set around a suburban teenager (John Magaro) in New Jersey whose garage band aspires to be the next Rolling Stones, an ambition at odds with his traditional Italian father (former "Sopranos" star James Gandolfini).

In a press conference at Lincoln Center, Chase called the film, soundtracked by his favorite rock songs, "a compilation album."

"In 'The Sopranos,' one of my favorite parts of that ? or maybe my favorite part of that whole thing ? was putting the picture and the sound together, putting the music in," Chase said. "I wanted to continue that. I missed that once I was gone."

The film, which Paramount Vantage will release on Dec. 21, is about the revolutionary advent of rock 'n' roll, told not through its famous players but, as Chase said, from "the backstage" perspective ? the regular suburban kids inspired and moved by its spirit.

"I don't want to get into this thing, like I'm bragging about the '60s," he said. "But the one thing I have to say: The music was great. ... Music was, at the time, a way into everything, at least for me and for a lot of people I knew, too. That's the way I first learned about art and poetry and fashion, humor, film. It all came from there."

The 67-year-old Chase has long aspired to make a feature film. His "Sopranos," which concluded in 2007, was imbued with movie-like storytelling that significantly raised the bar for television drama. "Not Fade Away," while of very different and more tender substance, shares many unmistakable elements of "The Sopranos," particularly the familiar swirl of family tension, pop culture, philosophy and suburban life.

Though Chase said the film is very personal to him, he insisted it wasn't autobiographical. Chase, like the main character, played drums as a youngster, but he refused to even label himself and his friends "a band."

"I never even bought a set of drums," said Chase. "I played on cardboard boxes and stuff. We never got out of the basement."

How to Use GIF Images Effectively With Article Marketing

How to Use GIF ImagesHere goes another informative post from my friend Seth. ?If you want to play ?around with GIF pictures and rank for it, then you will enjoy this.

There are seemingly an endless and ever-changing amount of ways one can advertise their business or affiliate website online.

Figuring out how to use GIF images effectively with our article marketing endeavors can easily give us an edge by displaying really cool picture formats related to our written content. Yes, it?ll require a little extra work on your part, but given it?s not often you see a .gif image on even popular search terms; it gives a great opportunity to reel in a lot of potential traffic.

What is a GIF Image File?

There are many files formats out there including JPEG/JFIF, JPEG 2000, Exif, PNG, and GIF. These are only a few and there are many other types found out there. For figuring out our question of what is a GIF image file, a GIF image is quite unique from the others because of how it displays images that transition from one to another all in one saved format. Yes, this means the image format will be larger (which is all the more reason to only do just a few transitional images for page load ability sake), but it can be used quite effectively in Google (or other major search engine like Yahoo or Bing) in the picture section.

Normally, you?ll need to gather non-copyrighted pictures ideally related to only the specific product you?re advertising for, and create a unique GIF image on an easy to rank but decent trafficking keyword.

Create My Own GIF Image

I?m sure there are a lot of intricate and unique methods you can use with picture formatting, but I?m going to mainly stick to the main concept needed for dominating the search engines with unique pictures in the picture area with GIF images.

First, you need to know how to create my own GIF image. I have no doubt there are tons of platforms out there you can use, but you should be able to do this for free without paying anything. Then in the off chance you find a program that requires you to pay money, your best bet will be to either rotate between free GIF image platforms by-monthly or use 1 totally free platform.

Second, you need to find the pictures you want to use for creating your GIF image. ?Keep in mind all a GIF image is, is a bunch of images that transition from 1 to another. Keeping a conscientious of page load ability is important too since large GIF files might slow down your page, creating a small detrimental factor going against your page ranking (yes, I realize engaging your audience is the main thing ? but still something to be conscientious of). After you have the 3 or 4 images you?d like to use for your GIF image, you need to create it.

Third, for creating a GIF image, there are a few different things you?ll need to do. You?ll first?need to figure out what size you want your picture to be. So what images you have could possibly be stretched if not fitted correctly to your desired GIF image size with say Picasa. You?ll then need to select a speed for the transitioning of the pictures and then upload the pictures before actually creating the GIF image. After that it?s simply a matter of uploading it to your computer and then downloading it to the desired interface (Your WordPress blog).

Finally, once you upload the picture file to your WordPress blog (or whatever other third?party application you?re using), make sure you put it on a part of the post where it?ll be beneficial to what you?re advertising.

Very important: It?s ideal to put the post or page title as the exact name of the GIF image file and maybe even put in an alt tag of the post or page title so you will be ranked on that keyword. Google will pick up that text you wrapped around your image and rank it appropriately. It might even get ranked on other keywords depending on different tags found within your post, but I wouldn?t worry about that part.

How Do I Rank Pictures on Google?

I?m honestly not too knowledgeable in this playing field, but ranking your regular articles in Google comes almost naturally to me. It?s as easy as 1, 2, 3, (literally) given the top 3 pages are usually the unknown area of where you?ll rank once you?re pretty sure you?ll know you?ll hit the bottom of the first?page or whatever else.

If you know you?ll hit the top, it?s usually between the first?page or the second?page (sometimes it just turns out that way). But to answer the question of how do I rank pictures on Google, I would base this heavily on keyword competition for article marketing. If you have 400 or less competition on an article, chances are you?ll have even less competition on that keyword since most people either don?t correctly wrap the appropriate text around their image file, and how your GIF image will easily stand out from the rest anyway.

Hope you enjoyed this information. Please, give us your feedbacks in the comment area below.

Traps a Tuscaloosa First Time Buyer Should Look For

No matter how broad your previous life experiences may have been, buying a home is a very big deal. For a first time buyer, whether here in Tuscaloosa or anywhere else, the impact of that life-changing purchase is doubly impactful. It affects different people in different ways, but after the dust clears, there is one emotion I never want my Tuscaloosa first-time buyer clients to feel: remorse.

You might think that the size of the transaction makes it wildly unlikely that even a first time buyer would overlook any major missteps. After all, when you are new to such an important purchase, you are bound to be extra cautious. Yet when you consider the challenging distractions along the way (going through your first mortgage approval process; scraping together a down payment; learning how inspections proceed, etc.) it?s easy to see how they can trip up a first time buyer. Getting any one of them dealt with can become a main preoccupation?so much so, that seemingly minor issues get overlooked. It?s part of my job to do my best to see that my Tuscaloosa first time buyer clients stay vigilant on all fronts.

Common concerns to watch for:

Foundation Problems ? The true frustration of dealing with a home with foundation problems is something a first time buyer may not fully appreciate. They aren?t for the faint of heart (or the faint of pocket book).? Foundation problems can cost $50,000 for even a simple fix ? but a first time home buyer usually doesn?t have that expectation. If an inspection reveals any sort of foundation issue, it?s an absolute ?must? to call in the experts to assess the severity of the problem ? no matter what the time pressures may be.

Faulty Siding -? Expensive to fix and ugly to look at, improperly-installed siding was a big problem in the 1980s and 1990s. While many of those issues have been addressed by now, bad siding can still plague a new homeowner.? Believe it or not, it can cost as much as $25,000 to $150,000 to replace. Anyone considering a home built in the 80?s or 90?s should be sure to pay extra attention to the siding during inspections.

Special Assessments ? Agents dread seeing the words ?special assessment? on a listing: these are additional costs to a homeowner in a condo or homeowners association that any project, repair or unexpected cost can trigger.? The cost to re-side a condominium complex, for example, can easily run into the $100,000 range, typically divided among the homeowners.

These are just a few examples of unforeseen details that a Tuscaloosa first time buyer would not necessarily emphasize. Owning a home is a deeply rewarding experience ? especially if I can help avoid any ?first-timer? buying missteps. It?s my privilege to be able to help steer every client, whether a first time buyer or not, toward the right Tuscaloosa home choice for their families.
