Study: Hybrid owners unlikely to buy another

Hybrid sales have been surging as fuel prices take their latest run towards record levels.? But the news might not be nearly as good as it would seem if a new study by R.L. Polk is any indication.
Despite previous sales surges tied to past petroleum price hikes the U.S. hybrid vehicle market hasn?t been able to maintain its momentum and the Polk study apparently explains why. After living with the high-mileage technology, nearly two of three hybrid owners wind up returning to a more conventional vehicle when it?s time to trade in.
?Having a hybrid in the product lineup can certainly give a brand a competitive edge when it comes to attracting new customers,? noted Brad Smith, director of Polk?s Loyalty Management Practice.? ??The repurchase rates of hybrid vehicles are an indication that consumers are continuing to seek alternative solutions to high fuel prices.?
Midsize Makers Set for Shoot-out
According to Polk tracking data, only 35 percent of hybrid vehicle owners purchased another gas-electric model when trading in during 2011.
The number varied significantly depending on the hybrid owned.? Less than 20 percent of?Honda hybrid owners returned to purchase another gas-electric vehicle ? whether from Honda or another brand.? For the world?s most-popular hybrid, the Toyota Prius, 41 percent bought another gas-electric model, whether from Toyota or another brand.? But it?s significant that even then, nearly three of every five Prius owners did not go back for another hybrid.
Hybrid loyalty rates have also varied significantly from year to year.? During the third quarter of 2011, when fuel prices were reasonably stable, only 30.9 percent of owners traded in on another hybrid.? But when fuel prices started to surge during the final three months of last year, the loyalty rate rose to 40.1 percent.
American Teens Waiting Longer to Drive
Polk officials suggested the technology is having a hard time because of the high cost for hybrids.? Analysts note it can take as long as seven to 10 years to recover the added cost through savings on fuel. The industry is struggling to lower that so-called ?payback period,? but gains haven?t come quite as quickly as forecast.
There are other factors that limit loyalty.? For one thing, there are a growing number of alternatives, including diesels ? which are being offered in growing numbers ? and advanced versions of conventional gasoline technology.? The 2013 Nissan Altima, for example, is expected to deliver 38 mpg on the highway, Ford?s next-generation Fusion close behind at 37 ? both yielding only slightly less than the current Camry Hybrid.? Hyundai, meanwhile, boasts five different models now getting over 40 mpg on the highway.

Toyota hopes to boost loyalty rates with its expanded Prius ?family,? which now includes the smaller Prius C and big Prius V ? those being joined later this year by the Prius Plug-in.
But despite continued optimism by hybrid proponents, the technology has shown little forward momentum.
Demand for the technology ? especially the dedicated Toyota hybrid line has traditionally soared and then sunk along with fuel prices, and last month saw a huge surge in Prius sales.? Whether that trend will hold when pump prices peak remains to be seen.? On an annual basis, it peaked at 2.9 percent in 2008 ? the year gas hit its all-time record.? Hybrid sales slipped to 2.4 percent of the U.S. market in 2011.
?The lineup of alternate-drive vehicles and their premium price points just aren?t appealing enough to consumers to give the segment the momentum it once anticipated, especially given the growing strength of fuel economy among compact and midsize competitors,? according to Lacey Plache, Edmunds.com chief economist.

All of the guys are back except for Chris Klein. Why doesn't his character, Oz, return?
That's a fair question. I would have loved to have Chris Klein return but I had to think about it from a story perspective. What would he be doing? He fell in love in the first one. We don't want to just have him sitting there.
In ?American Pie 2,? we ran into problems because we were so concerned about getting 11 people in to the movie. I wanted to give all of them big, juicy parts. We shot it all but when it came time to make the movie, we couldn't include them all. It would have been a five-hour movie. I hope they don't take it personally.
Was there ever the thought of having Chris Klein return for a cameo at the end of ?American Wedding??
We had talked about doing cameos at the end. That's a tough question to answer. It's part of the business side of showbiz where if we wanted Chris Klein we had to fly him in from London so that we could get him for an afternoon, which means we'd have to rent a private jet. We can't spend $500,000 just to get someone there and back.
Will there be an "American Pie 4?"
Everything is possible.

Why is there a third one and what can fans expect from this movie?
I did a third one because fans want to see a third one. The audience is still in love with these characters. People saw them go through and lose their virginity, and then people saw them party together and slowly grow apart. I think much like life and your friends, you want to kind of see where they've gone and so we had to follow it up. We followed it up with them getting married, and we followed them to the bachelor party. It's kind of like your friends. You go to their bachelor party and you go to their weddings, and I think that was really the reason that this one kind of had to happen.
Are we going to see a number four? Will we see children? You know, there should be. It would be their next step, but it would probably be like in 50 years when we all can't get jobs. It'll be like Grandpa Jason Biggs? It'll be more like ?American Grandpas? or something like that.
What's next for you?
Well we have a movie coming out in February called ?The Butterfly Effect? for New Line Cinema with Ashton Kutcher. We shot that last summer with Amy Smart, Eldon Henson and William Lee Scott. Then we're working on something called ?Monster-in-Law,? which is over at New Line Cinema and it looks like it's something that Jennifer Lopez is doing. We're putting that together to shoot in November.
?Monster-in-Law?? So what's that about?
It's about a mother-in-law. The bride-to-be finds the perfect guy but then soon finds out there's also a mother that comes along with the package and that kind of screws things up.
And Jennifer Lopez would be the bride-to-be?
Yes, Jennifer Lopez would be the bride-to-be.
Who do you have in mind as the mother-in-law?
Probably Jane Fonda but we're not sure. That would be great.

Study: Obamacare will raise deficit
The study, by a conservative economist, is due to be release Tuesday, and says that the deficit will increase by $340 billion due to the president's signature health care law.
Reigniting a debate about the bottom line for President Barack Obama's health care law, a leading conservative economist estimates in a study to be released Tuesday that the overhaul will add at least $340 billion to the deficit, not reduce it.
Skip to next paragraphCharles Blahous, who serves as public trustee overseeing Medicare and Social Security finances, also suggested that federal accounting practices have obscured the true fiscal impact of the controversial legislation, the fate of which is now in the hands of the Supreme Court.

Officially, the health care law is still projected to help reduce government red ink. The Congressional Budget Office, the government's non-partisan fiscal umpire, said in an estimate last year that repealing the law actually would increase deficits by $210 billion from 2012-2021.
The CBO, however, has not updated that projection. If $210 billion sounds like a big cushion, it's not. The government has recently been running annual deficits in the $1 trillion range.
Neither the budget office nor the White House had any immediate reaction late Monday to the new estimates.
"Taken as a whole, the enactment of the (health care law) has substantially worsened a dire federal fiscal outlook," Blahous wrote in his 52-page analysis, released by George Mason University's Mercatus Center. "The (law) both increases a federal commitment to health care spending that was already unsustainable under prior law and would exacerbate projected federal deficits relative to prior law."
The law expands health insurance coverage to more than 30 million people now uninsured, paying for it with a mix of Medicare cuts and new taxes and fees.
Blahous cited a number of factors for his conclusion:
? The health care's law deficit cushion has been reduced by more than $80 billion because of the administration's decision not to move forward with a new long-term care insurance program that was part of the legislation. The Community Living Assistance Services and Supports program raised money in the short turn, but would have turned into a fiscal drain over the years.
? The cost of health insurance subsidies for millions of low-income and middle-class uninsured people could turn out to be higher than forecast, particularly if employers scale back their own coverage.
? Various cost control measures, including a tax on high-end insurance plans that doesn't kick in until 2018, could deliver less than expected.
The decision to use Medicare cuts to finance the expansion of coverage for the uninsured will only make matters worse, Blahous said. The money from the Medicare savings will have been spent, and lawmakers will have to find additional cuts or revenues to forestall that program's insolvency.
Under federal accounting rules, the Medicare cuts are also credited as savings to that program's trust fund. But the CBO and Medicare's own economic estimators already said the government can't spend the same money twice.

Blahous served in the George W. Bush White House from 2001-2009, rising to deputy director of the National Economic Council. He currently is a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center.
