Scottish champs Celtic sign Nigeria's Ambrose

Nigeria defender Efe Ambrose joined Scottish champions Celtic from Israeli club FC Ashdod for an undisclosed fee on Friday.

Ambrose, who has 14 caps for Nigeria, agreed a three-year contract with Neil Lennon's side and the 23-year-old admitted he had been tempted to Glasgow by the lure of Champions League action.

Celtic have been drawn in the same group as Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.

"Today is one of the happiest days of my life, signing for one of the biggest clubs in the world - a club I have known about since I was young," Ambrose told Celtic's website.

"I have come here to find we are in the same group as Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.

"It's a lovely group, you might call it the group of death and it will be hard, but hard work always pays.

"I am just looking forward to meeting my team-mates now, there is no better place for me than Scotland.

"I just can't wait to get started, to play in front of the fans and call this place home."

Fed says economy grew slowly in July

By Lucia Mutikani, Reuters

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. economy continued to grow gradually in July and early August, but manufacturing activity was softening in many areas of the country, the Federal Reserve said on Wednesday.

In its Beige Book report of anecdotal information on business activity collected from contacts nationwide, the U.S. central bank said retail activity, including auto sales, had picked up since the last report.

"Reports from the twelve Federal Reserve districts suggest economic activity continued to expand gradually in July and early August across most regions and sectors," the Beige Book said.

The economic snapshot was prepared for use by Fed officials at their upcoming policy meeting on Sept. 12-13, when policymakers will debate whether further central bank bond purchases are warranted to spark a stronger recovery.

The economy grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the second quarter, supported by exports and investment in the construction of nonresidential structures. The pace was a slowdown from the 2.0 percent rate set in the first quarter.

The Beige Book captured the beginning of the third quarter and suggested the speed of the recovery was falling short of what was needed to spur faster hiring. "Most districts reported that employment was holding steady or growing only slightly," the Fed said.

It also noted that manufacturing was softening in many districts, matching findings from recent regional factory surveys. Much of the slowdown is blamed on weak demand overseas, especially in Asia.

"Many districts reported some softening in manufacturing, either a slowdown in the rate of growth or a decline in the level of sales, output or orders," the Fed said. "Across the districts, few manufacturing firms reported any major hiring or layoffs."

How average quakes may turn into giants

Average earthquakes may turn into mega-quakes when rock in a fault weakens much the same way ice does under ice skates, researchers say.

The finding by two researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, is based on past research on the friction between rocks in an earthquake fault. Their study confirmed that rock can develop weak points under pressure and suggests that the consequent drop in friction could help release energy. ?

Previous research suggested that during earthquakes, friction between rocks in specific areas of fault zones rapidly lessens, much the way ice skate blades reduce friction by melting icy surfaces as they glide over them. Such a phenomenon could help solve a longstanding mystery: why major fault zones such as the San Andreas Fault generate so little heat from the grinding of rocks compared with the magnitude of the earthquakes they produce.

"The process allows highly stressed areas to rapidly break down, acting like the weakest links in the chain," said researcher Kevin Brown. "Even initially stable regions of a fault can experience runaway slip by this process if they are pushed at velocities above a key tipping point."

This drop in friction also could help faults release energy. "This may be relevant for how you get from large earthquakes to giant earthquakes," Brown said.

For instance, when it came to the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that devastated Japan in 2011, "we thought that large patches of the fault were just creeping along at a constant rate. Then, all of a sudden, they were activated and slipped to produce a mega-earthquake that produced a giant tsunami."

To learn more about these locations of weakness, the researchers conducted lab experiments mimicking earthquake processes, in which they ground rock samples in a lathe and monitored the amount of friction and heating it produced.

They discovered that at specific temperatures, "melt welts" ? points of weakness in the rock ? could indeed form, causing extreme drops in friction.

"The onset of weakening was found to be associated with formation of small but visible streaks of molten rock," said researcher Yuri Fialko, a geophysicist at Scripps.

"It was surprising because previous studies have suggested just the opposite ? namely, that the melt streaks begin to form when the sliding surface becomes stronger, rather than weaker.

"Understanding the mechanism of extreme weakening during high-speed sliding will advance our understanding of physics of earthquake ruptures and help design more realistic rupture models," Fialko told OurAmazingPlanet. Those models "can in turn be used for predictions of peak ground motion, shaking intensity, damage to buildings and infrastructure, and potential losses due to destructive earthquakes."

Future research can explore whether melt welt weakening applies to most materials common in fault zones, and lead to fieldwork to locate melt welts along fault zones.

Brown and Fialko will detail their findings in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

India planning fresh 2G spectrum auctions for November 12th

India's Department of Telecommunications has issued guidelines for the forthcoming 2G spectrum auction, penciled in for November 12th. While the subcontinent has already flogged off its 3G bands, it withdrew 122 licenses in the 1,800MHz and 800Mhz waves due to allegations of serious corruption. The country has set the starting price of $2.5 billion, a figure that the networks have balked at, saying that it'll cause tariffs to increase -- but is less than half of the $5.61 billion the country had originally sought to raise during the first, scandal-ridden auction.

(This month, Puck Daddy asked bloggers for every NHL team to tell us The Essentials for their franchises ? everything from the defining player and trade, to the indispensable fan traditions. Here?s our own Harrison Mooney, giving us The Essentials for the Vancouver Canucks.)

Getty

If we?re being fair, the most essential aspects of Canuck fandom are pessimism and self-loathing. In the 41 years of this franchise, very little has gone our way and it?s gotten to us. We?ve become oversensitive. Our fuse is short.?It can make us our own worst enemy, such as that one time we rioted.

And also that other time.

Our ever-increasing pessimism has made us a tough fanbase to please. Mark Messier, Canadian hero? We hate him. Nevermind that he was voted the Canucks? most valuable player in 1999-2000. He?s the worst. Roberto Luongo, the best goalie to ever play for the Canucks? Get him out of here.?The 2010-11 team that went to the Cup Final? Blow it up.

But there?s a bright side to our blind pessimism. The moment something manages to wriggle out from under it, we love it unconditionally. We deify it. So help us if you ever say an unkind word about that thing. Don?t even think about it, or we?re mess you up. We?re crazy, remember. We destroyed our own city once twice.

And you stay away from Trevor Linden.

Player

Did I mention we love Trevor Linden? Because we love Trevor Linden. And not just for his hockey ability. He?s also a stuf. Our men tell our women they?re looking ?Trevor Linden good? ? that?s how much we love Trevor Linden.

Vancouver?s love for Trevor Linden goes beyond hockey for a number of reasons, foremost of which is that hockey alone couldn?t earn him that special place in our hearts. Linden was excellent ? a heart and soul guy ? and he very nearly dragged the Canucks to a Stanley Cup Final in 1994. But he?s hardly the franchise?s best player. Markus Naslund is the Canucks? all-time leading scorer. Linden?s third on that list, and he?ll be fourth by the end of next season (if it happens).

Even at his prime, Linden wasn?t the best. In terms of pure skill, Pavel Bure was way beyond him. But there?s a reason Linden?s jersey is retired and Pavel?s isnt.

Linden just clicked with this city. He was and still is active in the community. He played a rugged, two-way game. He gave his all every night. He put Jeff Norton through a pane of glass. He played 16 seasons for the Canucks, bleeding blue and green and white and red and black and maroon and darker blue. When it comes to essential players, there is no other choice.

Season

This one?s going to raise a few eyebrows, what with its recency and the sour taste it still leaves in people?s mouths, but the 2010-11 season had it all.

Daniel Sedin won the Art Ross, Ryan Kesler won the Selke, Alain Vigneault was coach of the year, Mike Gillis was GM of the year, Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider won the Jennings, the Canucks led in almost every team category, the team won the Presidents? Trophy, and they came within a game of winning the Stanley Cup. That?s a damn good year, and the fact that this selection is going to be met with criticism is absurd.

Sure, there?s 1994 to consider, a year that?s had just enough time to go from ?thing that happened? to ?legend?, but that Canuck team went on a flukey run. For most of the season, they were a middling, unimpressive team. When it comes to a whole season, nothing beats 2010-11.

Granted, there was a bit of a ruckus afterwards, but technically that happened after the season was over. So it doesn?t count.

Game

Saturday, June 11th, 1994. It was Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, and with the Rangers leading 3-2, the Canucks needed the win. Lucky for them, everything went their way. Jeff Brown scored the first goal. Early in the third, he scored the third, giving the Canucks a 3-1 lead. Then, late in the third, Geoff Courtnall scored, but the play continued, and the Rangers scored to make it 3-2. After review, Courtnall?s goal was counted, and the score suddenly changed to 4-1.

LindenReviewing this game now, two things stand out: 1) holy Hell, was there a lot of hooking back then. 2) Trevor Linden played the greatest game of his career.

Game 6 was also the moment Linden reached sainthood. Heck, there?s even a photo of the exact moment it happened. At the end of the game, an iconic photo was snapped. In it, an exhausted, beaten-up Linden rests on Kirk Maclean, hardly able to move. Later we?d learn he had two broken ribs. But it didn?t seem to matter. ?He?ll play, you know he?ll play. He?ll play on crutches,? said Jim Robson.

If there were an essential photo category, this would be it.

Goal

It?s tempting to make this Alex Burrows?s goal from the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs, but no discussion of essential Canucks moments is complete without a Pavel Bure goal.

Bure?s best was the double overtime winner over the Calgary Flames in Game 7 of the first round of the 1994 playoffs. The Canucks had gone down 3-1 in that series before clawing their way back with two straight overtime winners. And then Bure made it three after getting in behind the Calgary defence:

Good thing I?m already sitting down.

Trade

Markus Naslund for Alek Stojanov. Because the Canucks got Naslund, who wound up being one of the best players in franchise history, and the Penguins got some guy named Stojanov.

Unsung Hero

Thomas Gradin was inducted into the ring of honour in January of 2011, so he?s been somewhat sung, but he doesn?t get nearly enough credit for the trail he blazed in the late 1970s, as a European NHLer and as a Swede in Vancouver.

Gradin was the Canucks? first European player and his success primed this city to embrace Swedish stars in bulk. We?ve done so in recent years, with stars like Patrik Sundstrom, Matthias Ohlund, and Swedish captains Markus Naslund and Henrik Sedin.

Gradin has continued on with the Canucks as a Swedish scout and was instrumental in the drafting of Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, and Alex Edler.

Franchise Villain

Did I mention we don?t particularly care for Mark Messier out on Canada?s West coast? Seriously, our feud with the first ballot hall of famer is still ongoing. Earlier this summer, he managed to claim another six million dollars from the team. He haunts Vancouver even still.

It all began in 1994, when Messier?s Rangers defeated the Canucks for the Stanley Cup. But it didn?t end there. Not by a longshot.

Not content to simply break the hearts of Vancouverites from afar, Messier infiltrated the room, signing in Vancouver in 1997. He immediately took the captaincy from Trevor Linden ? who, as I mentioned earlier, we would prefer you not mess with ? and he took the number 11, which had been unofficially retired ?since former number 11 Wayne Maki died of brain cancer in 1974.

Taking a letter from a god and a number from a dead guy won?t win you many friends, but these are things that can be overcome if you play well, and Messier did not. Now, he didn?t play terribly, but 60 points in year 1 made it Messier?s worst season since his rookie year. And the team, believed by many to be a Messier-type away from contention, instead finished dead last in the Pacific Division. Then all that grave-robbing and Linden-disrespecting really mattered.

It still matters, dammit.

Fight

The greatest fight in the history of the Vancouver Canucks? Gino Odkick versus the St. Louis Blues. And the officials. And clothing.

My favourite part is when the official tries to grab his jersey, but forgets there?s no jersey and gets a handful of pec. Then Odjick pushes his hand away like, ?Don?t touch me, man, I?m practically naked.?

Coach

Mike Keenan. Just kidding.

I?m going to get crucified for this, but? Alain Vigneault.

Sure, Roger Nielsen has a statue outside the arena. And sure, Vigneault?s recent extension wasn?t exactly met with glee. He definitely has his critics. They saw he switches up his lines too much, that he doesn?t adjust quickly enough in the playoffs, that he gets outcoached, that he plays favourites, that, secretly, the Sedins are the coach of the team, and that he broke Cody Hodgson?s back on purpose.

But these are all unsubstantiated claims, and if it?s empirical evidence you want, AV?s got it. He?s got the most coaching wins in Canucks history, both in the regular season and the playoffs. He?s got two more Presidents? trophies than any other Canucks coach. He?s been nominated for the Jack Adams thrice and won once. Also, his laughter is infectious:

And here he is laughing at the suggestion that Kyle Wellwood was trying really hard in a game.

Never change, Vigneault.

Broadcaster

Jim Robson. Absolutely nobody in Vancouver has ever called a game like he did and it?s not even close.

Arena Behavior/Tradition/Trend

Towel Power is a great tradition, and it comes from a great story. In Game 2 of the 1982 Western Conference Finals in Chicago, the Canucks got what coach Roger Nielsen felt was the short shrift from the officials. After having a goal waved off, they were whistled for four consecutive penalties. After Denis Savard scored on the powerplay, putting the Blackhawks up 4-1, the Canucks? coaching staff decided to lobby some kind of protest. Tiger Williams suggested throwing sticks onto the ice.

But Neilsen, a craft sort, opted instead to place a towel on the end of his stick and wave it in mock surrender. The act was not appreciated, and he was ejected from the game.

It was appreciated in Vancouver, however, and when the series headed back there for Game 3, fans were armed with white towels to show their support for the team. The tradition continues to this day.

And so: the next time you claim Canuck fans are all a bunch of tinfoil-hatters, know that any conspiracy theory we espouse has nothing to do with you. We?re simply trying to rally the base.

Arena Food

Yikes. The food in Rogers Arena is decidedly unmemorable. Your best option is to hit up a Japadog stand on Robson during the walk to the arena.

Swag

I?m resisting the urge to say a car flag.

It?s the Flying V jersey. What an ugly, ugly, ugly thing. But it?s not just a jersey. It?s a metaphor for this team. When it?s at its ugliest, and it often is, we celebrate it. We embrace it. We wear it. The Vancouver Canucks ? as disgusting as they?ve looked for many, many years ? are ours. Heck, they used to wear this jersey, that?s how incompetent they are.

But a true Canucks fan doesn?t just cheer for the team in the rare moments they?re winning and looking good. A true fan cheers for them when they?re awful, and they look even worse. That?s what wearing the Flying V is all about. It?s like those monks that whip themselves in the back to show their devotion, but for hockey.

Reddit is getting a fundraising button

22 hrs.

Being ?the front page of the Internet? comes with power, and Redditors have often, if not a bit spontaneously, channeled that power for fundraising.

Among their good deeds: giving a bullied senior citizen bus monitor a $700,000 vacation budget, scrounging up $31,000 overnight to help a three-year-old who needed a bone marrow transplant, and contributing more than $180,000 to Haiti earthquake relief efforts.

Now, for the first time, Reddit users will be able to execute some of these fundraisers within Reddit-branded pages.

Starting today, managers of the site's topic pages, or Subreddits, can opt to accept donations to specific nonprofits by installing new "Donate" buttons on their Subreddit pages. The TwoXChromosomes Subreddit, for instance, will add a button to support She's the First, an organization that supports girls' education in the developing world.

The buttons and the donation system they're attached to, Reddit Donate, were developed by payment startup Dwolla in partnership with another payment startup called Stripe. It will launch with 12 nonprofit partners, including Kiva, Charity: Water, and DonorsChoose.?

Many Subreddits are already active fundraisers. The atheism Subreddit, for instance, helped raise more than $200,000 for Doctors Without Boarders by directing traffic to a third-party fundraising page.

Without a Reddit tool for accepting donations, most fundraising Redditors have, like the athiest group, pointed each other to crowd funding sites such as Indiegogo, independent funding sites, and custom landing pages on charities' websites to contribute.

At times it can be unclear, however, where the money is actually going. Money raised for the bullied bus monitor's vacation, for instance, was collected on an Indiegogo page that was not set up in her name, but a Redditor's name. If a less scrupulous person had created the page, the story may have lost its happy ending.

?We want to protect our community, and for it to know that if it donates $100, that it's going to the right person and not to various fees,? Erik Martin, the general manager of Reddit, tells Fast Company.

Dwolla removes credit card numbers from transactions--and with them a handful of third-party financial-service providers?-and thus is able to charge an impressively low fee of $.25 for transactions more than $10 (transactions involving less than that are free). Money travels directly from donors' bank accounts to nonprofits' bank accounts. Stripe keeps the credit card in the process and charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.?

Reddit has taken other steps to support charitable efforts initiated in its site, but none so significant.

Earlier this month, the site named Crowdtilt its official fundraising partner. A newly-launched startup, Crowdtilt enables anyone to raise money for any kind of project, and it promised Reddit to wave fees and verify that donated money ends up where it is intended.

It's difficult to verify how organizations that aren't registered nonprofits are spending their money, so the Dwolla and Stripe button only applies to nonprofit partners for now. That leaves out the individual-specific causes Reddit is famous for supporting.

Ben Milne, the CEO of Dwolla, tells Fast Company that if Redditors embrace it, there's likely room for the project to evolve. For now, the new feature formalizes a giving habit that has already become part of Reddit's reputation.

?It?s just like anyone could always raise money for their project," says Milne, "but it got way easier when Kickstarter launched.??

12 Ads Featuring Incredibly Weird Roles For Children - Business ...

Ragu's recent ad following a young boy as he walks in on his parents in the bedroom, has stirred debate over how children are featured in ads. While children in ads tend to illicit feelings of kindness and tenderness, they can also make viewers feel a little, well, awkward.

And, this got us thinking: how else have advertisers used children in awkward situations to sell products?

There has to be a reason these borderline creepy ads are effective. For one thing, according to Psychology Today, effective advertising occurs when you ?take a product and to put it next to lots of other things that we already feel positively about.? For most people, seeing a picture of a child, no matter what the context, incites such positive feelings.

To demonstrate just how well this works, we put together a slideshow of 12 of the most awkward television and print ads featuring children. The list focuses on ads intended to sell products or services, and does not include public service announcements.

Healthy lifestyle reduces risk of hypertension by two thirds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Healthy behaviours regarding alcohol, physical activity, vegetable intake and body weight reduce the risk of hypertension by two thirds, according to research presented at the ESC Congress August 27.

The findings were presented by Professor Pekka Jousilahti from National Institute for Health and Welfare.

According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is the leading cause of mortality in the world, contributing annually to over 7 million deaths (about 15% of all deaths). Therefore, prevention of hypertension is essential to improving health and preventing morbidity and mortality, both in developing and developed countries.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether five major cardiovascular disease related lifestyle factors -- smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, obesity and consumption of vegetables -- predict the future increase of blood pressure and development of clinical hypertension, and need for antihypertensive drug treatment. This large prospective population-based cohort study included 9,637 Finnish men and 11,430 women who were 25 to 74 years of age and free of hypertension during the baseline measurements (1982-2002). Healthy lifestyle factors were defined as:

(1) not smoking,

(2) alcohol consumption less than 50g per week,

(3) leisure time physical activity at least 3 times per week,

(4) daily consumption of vegetables, and

(5) normal weight (BMI<25kg/m2).

Data on the development of hypertension during the follow-up period were obtained from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland register of people entitled to special reimbursement for antihypertensive drugs. During a mean follow-up of 16 years, 709 men and 890 women developed hypertension.

Smoking was omitted from the final analysis. Professor Jousilahti said: "Even though smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, it was not associated with the development of hypertension in our analyses, which is in accordance with previous studies."

The four remaining healthy lifestyle factors were included in the analysis. Hazard ratios for hypertension associated with adherence to 0 (the reference group), 1, 2, 3, and 4 healthy lifestyle factors were calculated after adjusting for age, year of entering the study, education, and smoking.

The hazard ratios for hypertension associated with adherence to 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 healthy lifestyle factors were 1.00, 0.74, 0.51, 0.34, and 0.33 for men, and 1.00, 0.89, 0.68, 0.41, and 0.37 for women. "The risk of hypertension was only one third among those having all four healthy lifestyle factors compared to those having none," said Professor Jousilahti. "Even having one to three healthy lifestyle factors reduced the risk of hypertension remarkably. For example having two healthy lifestyle factors reduced the risk of hypertension by nearly 50% in men and by more than 30% in women."

"Our analysis suggests that adherence to healthy lifestyle factors may have more of an impact on risk of hypertension in men than women," he added. "This could be because of the stronger association of obesity and alcohol consumption with the risk of hypertension in men than in women."

"Four modifiable lifestyle factors: alcohol consumption, physical activity, consumption of vegetables and keeping normal weight have a remarkable effect on the development of hypertension," said Professor Jousilahti. "Lifestyle modification has a huge public health potential to prevent hypertension. While our research suggests that lifestyle modification may produce greater reductions in hypertension in men than women, it also shows large benefits in women, and adherence to all four healthy lifestyle factors had a nearly similar effect in both sexes. Both men and women should take steps towards a healthier lifestyle to decrease their risk of hypertension."

He concluded: "Our study was focused on prevention of hypertension and therefore included subjects who did not have hypertension at baseline. But the results should apply to the treatment of patients with hypertension, who can reduce their blood pressure by modifying the four lifestyle factors alone, or by making these modifications while taking blood pressure lowering medication."

Scientists probe mysterious origins of humongous star explosions

Super-luminous supernovas, the biggest known explosions in space, remain shrouded in mystery. But scientists are beginning to understand their origins, which could help explain the creation of heavy elements in the early universe.

By Charles Q. Choi,?SPACE.com Contributor / August 24, 2012

Gamma rays detected by NASA's Fermi space telescope show that the remnant of Tycho's supernova shines in the highest-energy form of light. This portrait of the shattered star includes gamma rays (magenta), X-rays (yellow, green, and blue), infrared (red) and optical data.

The most powerful exploding stars in the universe are still cloaked in mystery, but some are now yielding the secrets of their origins, scientists say.

Research is also shedding light on gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions in the universe, up to a million times brighter than a supernova, scientists added.

The most powerful star explosions are supernovas, which are bright enough to briefly outshine all the stars in their galaxies. There are two known ways supernovas occur ? a Type Ia supernova arises when one star piles fuel onto a dying star known as a white dwarf, and a Type II supernova happens when the core of a massive star runs out of fuel, collapses to an extraordinarily dense nugget in a fraction of a second and then bounces and blasts its material outward.

In the past 12 years, scientists have detected a new class of supernovas, ones about two to 100 times brighter than all the others. These so-called super-luminous supernovas apparently come in three different flavors, only one of which is well-understood. [Amazing Supernova Photos]

The rarest but seemingly best-understood of these super-luminous, or super-bright, supernovas are the radioactively powered SLSN-R. These supernovas seem to arise from the collapses of stellar cores, and apparently also each involve huge amounts of a radioactive isotope of nickel in those dying stars, enough to equal several times the mass of the sun. As this radioactive material decays, it releases energy in the form of gamma rays and antimatter that makes the expanding material from the supernova glow.

The way this radioactive nickel is created remains hotly debated. One possibility is that it gets forged during the collapse of stellar cores; the other is that it is created in nuclear reactions involving oxygen in very massive stars, said study lead author Avishay Gal-Yam, an astrophysicist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.

Probably the most observed type of super-luminous supernova is the hydrogen-rich SLSN-II. They apparently typically emerge from stars that possess thick hydrogen envelopes, which veil their light and make it difficult to say what causes these explosions. They may get the boost in brightness from a number of culprits, such as newly formed black holes, which rapidly suck matter into themselves, or magnetars, which are rapidly spinning neutron stars with powerful magnetic fields ? either of these possibilities might disrupt the hydrogen tremendously, with luminous effects.

"SLSN-II are technically Type II supernovae, but are unlikely to be the same as common Type II supernovae that come from exploding red supergiant stars," Gal-Yam said. "The properties of SLSN-II cannot be matched by any red supergiant we know ? they must have different progenitors."

Indirect Giving Can Provide Tax Savings | Augulis Law Firm

Aug 24, 2012 ?/? By: Alan Augulis, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Estate Planning, Taxes

It is sometimes said that no good deed goes unpunished and this would seem to apply to gift giving in the United States. We have a federal gift tax that is unified with the estate tax. So, any gifts that you give that exceed the lifetime exclusion that is afforded to you are taxable at a rate of 35% in 2012. If this was not enough, next year the rate goes up to 55%.

If your resources do exceed the exclusion amount you may want to look for ways to transfer assets to people who would someday be inheriting them free of taxation. This can be done in an indirect manner by giving educational and medical gifts.

The IRS does not impose a tax if you pay the tuition bills of students as a gift. Using this exemption you cannot pay for books and fees and you can?t give the money to the student; it must be paid directly to the institution.

You can also pay medical bills for others as a gift free of taxation. In addition to paying for treatment you could also purchase health care insurance for someone else and this gift would be tax-free as well.

The best way to respond to potential estate tax exposure is to sit down and discuss your situation with a licensed and experienced Somerset County NJ estate planning lawyer. Your attorney will evaluate your financial situation, gain an understanding of your wishes, and apprise you of your options with regard to the appropriate tax efficiency strategies.

The Augulis Law Firm is a member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys.

8 Things to Learn from Jake Needham about eBooks and Publishing

It's not everyday in Thailand that you get to hear an internationally-acclaimed author talk about his work. The last time I had the opportunity to hear a writer speak was Stephen Leather over a year ago. Author Jake Needham gave a great talk yesterday morning at the Pattaya City Expats Club. I'm not a dues-paying member of this club, just some bum who happens to have a residence in the same province. Thankfully, I was invited to join the audience by the friendly folks at the PCEC. I've been working through Jake's latest thriller: A World of Trouble. People who have spent time in Thailand will recognize some of the familiar personalities and typical foibles of the country, but those who haven't been to the Land of Smiles can also enjoy this great crime novel.

Jake Needham sells around 5,000 eBooks a month and has been writing for years, so when he talks it is wise to listen. One nice thing about being part of the author community is that veteran writers often share tips and tricks of the trade and are extremely helpful to people just starting out. You cannot say this about every community--how many investment bankers are going to give you stock tips without charging an arm and a leg? Anyway, here's 8 good points he brought up on publishing, eBooks, and the future of reading.

1) Print Books are Hard to Discover

Due to the distribution challenges, logistical requirements, and high fixed costs for print books, it can be hard for authors to even get your book in a bookstore in the first place. Joel Friedlander touched on what a pain distributing to bookstores was in a blog post a few weeks back. Once you get your book into a bookstore, it might not even be worthwhile. Unless you're some bigwig author, most bookstores are just going to turn them sideways and stuff them on a shelve in between the Woman's Studies section and the bathroom. Jake mentioned some of his frustrations with this process.

2) Retailers of Print Books are a Commodity Business

One of the "dirty little secrets" of the book business, Jake noted, is that the Barnes & Nobles, Waterstones, and Asiabooks (in Thailand's case) of the world just want to stock shelves with books and move them out the door. They're not really interested in selling specific books or figuring out what customers really want. In a lot of ways it's like going to Walmart or Tesco and buying sugar. Jake asked the audience do you really care what brand of sugar you buy? No, not really. You just want to know that the sugar (or books) are there, because the customer is probably going to buy some no matter what the brand name is. Of course you and I know that a business model involving mass sales without customer feedback or a solid marketing strategy is not well-suited to the information age...just ask Borders.

3) The Publisher's Main Reason for Existence was Product Placement, but That No Longer Applies with eBooks

Once upon a time, the big added value that publishers offered was the infrastructure and capacity to get your book in a bookstore. If you were a top-tier author, they might even do a little promotion for you (ads in magazines, swag, etc.) However, with the rise of eBooks the playing field is becoming much more level. The Amazon algorithm is about as mysterious as the Bermuda Triangle, but one thing for certain is that it doesn't really discriminate whether you are self-published or Big 6-published. Jake said that this reality truly benefits the author and the reader.

4) With eBooks, Readers are the Gatekeepers, Not Publishers

Jake said he was pleased that readers are the ones who decide whether a book will be a success or not. Under the publishing process for the last several hundred years or so, authors had to write to impress the publisher, but not the reader. By allowing a direct connection between author and reader through eBooks, an author can better understand their audience. This of course also has the benefit of improving your writing and sales. If you're the kind of author who enjoys writing so they can hobknob with the blue-hairs on the wine and cheese circuit of Manhattan, this new paradigm of writing for the masses might be a bad thing. However, if you're like the rest of us trying to make a living, this is great.

5) The Accessibility of eBooks Can't Be Beat

Speaking as a reader, Jake noted that he really enjoyed the accessibility of eBooks. As a person who actually has the money to travel (he must not be married to a Thai woman), Jake enjoys carrying around an iPad rather than a suitcase full of books. He even mentioned that he would read on his iPhone in a pinch. Jake prefers the back-lit eReading off tablets (same as me), but other folks in the audience mentioned the e-ink displays were easier on the eyes (same as Jeff Bezos). One gentleman during the Q&A even stated that he needs to read on a MacBook plugged into a 32" monitor due to trouble with his eyesight. Whatever format the reader prefers, the reflowable nature of eBooks allows a good reading experience for people of all different preferences.

6) As an Author, Don't Be Afraid to Outsource

Giving some hope to our new startup, BB eBooks, Jake noted that he outsources his cover design and interior design/eBook formatting. He said that the EPUB and MOBI/KF8 formats were the major standards, but he didn't really know how they were put together. That sounds about right, because you sort of have to be a big nerd with skin problems and some time on your hands to figure out the technical requirements of eBooks. He paid a company to turn his word document into the eBook format, which is the crux of our own business model. He also talked about the need to invest in a cover designer and editor. All in all, he said you could get your book published for about $500. This is in the same ballpark as we advise our clients; however, it really depends on what you want to do and not do.

7) Marketing is Somewhat Mysterious, but Get to Know Your Readers

Like every other author, small press, and big publishing houses, the bulletproof way to market your eBook is a bit of mystery. Jake knows this and every author who isn't full of himself knows this. eBooks and social media are just so new and dynamic that it's difficult to say. However, Jake did provide some tidbits on marketing. He says that word of mouth works best for him and he is constantly connecting with his readers, which lets people know he is a good guy. No one wants to buy a book from a jackass. Lindsay Buroker has some great tips on how not to be a schmuck when you market your eBook.

8) eBook Piracy is not a Big Concern

During the Q&A, I asked Jake about his approach to the problem of eBook piracy. He said because his eBooks are priced reasonably and fairly (about $4.99), he isn't really worried about it. This is extremely good news for a high-profile author to be saying this, since Digital Rights Management (DRM) is holding back the entire eBook industry. Jake said he had never heard about one of his eBooks being pirated. I checked some of the torrent sites that are known to have pirated eBooks (no, I won't share the links), and lo and behold none of Jake's books were there. Hopefully, Jake will take this message to other authors who equate eBook piracy with the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse.

A big thank-you is in order to Jake Needham for making time to give a talk on a Sunday morning (over a three-day weekend in Thailand no less). Show some love by picking up a copy of A World of Trouble.
