Trucker who killed hitchhikers gets life sentences

A serial killer who set up a torture chamber in his truck and kidnapped mostly female hitchhikers across the United States has admitted murdering a newlywed couple in Texas, according to reports.

Robert Ben Rhoades --?already serving a life sentence for the death of a 14-year-old girl in Illinois --?this week pleaded guilty in?West Texas to killing Patricia Candace Walsh and her husband Scott Zyskowski, both in their 20s, the Desert News reported.

Prosecutors had agreed not to seek the death penalty in exchange for the pleas and Rhoades,?65,?was given two life sentences, the News said.

The paper said?Rhoades, a long-haul truck driver,?was the subject of the book "Roadside Prey" by Alva Busch.

In his?cab was "a type of dungeon with handcuffs on the ceiling,"?the News reported. In 1996, the Tucson Weekly, citing officials,?said it?was believed that Rhoades?had been killing an average of three women a month by the early 1990s.

The Associated Press reported the couple, from Seattle,?were hitchhiking to Georgia to preach the Christian gospel, when they took a ride from Rhoades near El Paso, Texas in early 1990.

FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said investigations concerning Rhoades were continuing.

The Motivation Station: Motivation Monday - Health and Fitness Recap

Here at Motivation Monday I've been doing a series on Health and fitness for the last 6 weeks. I've presented challenges,tools, articles, assignments and invited all of you to participate along with me. Here's a little recap of the past 6 weeks along with the links for each post if you are just joining us...

Health and Fitness - Time to focus on health and fitness! I presented a list of 10 things we could do in order to prepare ourselves both mentally and physically to start taking better care of ourselves. I called the first 3 weeks our pre-training time.

Health and Fitness Challenge - I repeated the 10 things list complete with my answers. I had started daily walks and healthier eating and challenged you to do the same.

?

Final Pre-Training Week - I suggested we start using helpful tracking tools - My Fitness Pal to track food and exercise to get an idea of our average nutrition intake and calories burned during exercise. I also suggested wearing a pedometer to see what our steps are like on average, prior to making any changes or setting new goals.

Making Fitness Fun - Just fun little things we can all do to add little bits of fitness to our day.

?

Muscle - Building muscle is so important! I dedicated my fitness focus to building muscle at this point, and I challenged you to grab some weights and learn how to use them too.?

?

Transformation - I read the book Transformation, joined the website and the 12 week spring challenge. I also began the Transformation 5/25 workout plan.

?

I started out slowly but stuck with my goals each week. I'm getting stronger each day, my endurance is building, I've lost 10 pounds, 2 inches from my waist, and my body-fat levels are down a full 5%.?

How are you coming along on your own health and fitness goals?

The hows and whys don't really matter. When it comes down to the bottom line it's pretty simple - either we do it or we don't.?

Gas stations running dry as Brazil truckers strike

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Sao Paulo's 2,000 gas stations are rapidly running out of fuel as a strike by truck drivers who haul gas in South America's largest city entered a second day Tuesday, according to business representatives.

Truckers are protesting the city government's attempt to restrict where big trucks can drive in a metropolis infamous for streets that are congested at all hours.

Jose Gouveia, president of an association representing gas station owners said almost all stations were hit by the strike.

"They're either running low or are completely out of gas and ethanol," he told reporters. "I expect all of them will be completely out of fuel By the end of the day."

Shell station manager Marcelo Fernandes said all his gas and ethanol ran out at 9 a.m. and that he stood to lose about $15,000 in sales for every 24 hours that his tanks were empty.

"They're killing us, the government has got to give in to the guys. In the best-case scenario, if they ended the strike now, I don't think I would get any fuel before Thursday," said Fernandes, standing inside his station in Sao Paulo's chic Jardins neighborhood.

Martin Santos pulled his metallic silver Honda Civic into the Shell station and was shocked to discover there was no gas to buy.

"The mayor has got to get his act together or this city is going to be complete chaos," he said. "There has to be a compromise. Sao Paulo lives by these truckers, they deliver all our gas, food, everything."

Local media reported drivers were forming lines at some gas stations, but in central Sao Paulo there were none to be seen: it appeared most stations had run out of gas so there was nothing to line up for.

The vice president of the Sao Paulo Truck Drivers Union said all 800 of the city's tanker truck drivers joined the strike.

Claudinei Pelegrini said the strike will not only affect the city's fleet of more than 7 million cars but also the more than 5 million people who use the public bus system every day to get to and from work since "truckers are not delivering fuel to bus companies."

Pelegrini said independent truck drivers transport at least 90 percent of the fuel in Sao Paulo.

The union that represents the city's bus companies said its members had enough fuel to last until Wednesday.

To make matters worse, he said truckers who transport food and construction material were expected to join the strike by Wednesday.

Fuel deliveries for all emergency services are guaranteed by the union he said.

"The strike does not affect deliveries to airports, hospitals and police and fire stations," he said.

The new restrictions limit the hours some of the city's highways can be used by truckers and forces them to use alternative routes that "increase transportation costs and the amount of time it takes to deliver the product," Pelegrini said.

The city's transportation department said in a statement that it 'vehemently repudiates" the strike and that police have been asked to protect non-striking truckers who have been threatened."

Both Gouveia and Pelegrini said truckers would return to work if the restrictions are made more flexible.

Repeated phone calls for comment from city officials went unanswered.

169 years later, Tiny Tim gets a diagnosis

Plucky, ailing Tiny Tim is one of the most enduring characters to come out of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella "A Christmas Carol." But Dickens never explains why Tiny Tim wears leg braces and uses a crutch, nor does he make clear what will kill the young boy if the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge doesn't change his ways.

Now, a medical doctor thinks he has the answer. According to Russell Chesney, a physician at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tiny Tim suffered from a combination of rickets and tuberculosis.

Chesney made his diagnosis based on Tim's deformities described in the text, along with the story's insinuation that the boy's disease would be curable if his father had more money. Rickets is a bone disorder caused by a deficiency in vitamin D, calcium or phosphate. Lack of these crucial nutrients softens the bones, and leg braces would have been the 1840s solution, Chesney said. Since vitamin D-fortified milk and infant formula was introduced decades ago, this disorder is rarely seen in the United States.

Not only that, but vitamin D deficiency can contribute to tuberculosis by weakening the immune system, allowing the bacterial infection that causes the disease to run rampant. Tuberculosis, once known as the "white plague," was a killer in Dickens' time, Chesney said. Currently about one-third of the world population is infected with TB, with cases in the Americas accounting for just under 3 percent of this total, according to the World Health Organization.

"People who have nutritional deficiency also may have diseases in which nutrition plays a role, and tuberculosis is one of them," he told LiveScience.

Tiny Tim's life in cramped, polluted London would have set him up for both rickets and tuberculosis, Chesney said. At the time, 60 percent of children of working-class London families had rickets, brought on by poor nutrition and lack of sunlight. (London's coal-choked skies blocked the sun's ultraviolet light that helps the body synthesize vitamin D.)

At the same time, half of working-class kids had signs of tuberculosis, Chesney reported Monday in the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. Tiny Tim's rickets could have been reversed ? and his tuberculosis improved ? by sunshine, a better diet and cod liver oil, a supplement rich in vitamin D, Chesney said.

Chesney isn't the first to suggest a medical diagnosis for Tiny Tim. Others have suggested that he had polio, cerebral palsy or a kidney disease called renal tubular acidosis.

Dickens isn't telling, of course, and "it's always hard to diagnose a character who is totally fictional," Chesney said. But he said that Dickens' descriptions of 1800s ailments are often very accurately rendered. Tiny Tim may have been based on two real people in Dickens' life: his nephew, Henry, who died of tuberculosis, and the son of a friend who was disabled.

"The greatest fun in all of this is getting to read Charles Dickens again," Chesney said.

Credit Repair Tips ? Disputing Credit Report ... - Finance and Credit

As you no doubt realize, your credit report contains a great deal of personal information about you. For example it has a history of your addresses over the past several years, if you pay your bills on time, any lawsuits you may have been involved in, arrests and if you have filed bankruptcy in the past. All of this information is collected and then sold by the 3 major credit companies to many different places if you allow it and they make the request. If any of this information is incorrect, you may need to use the credit repair tips ? disputing credit report errors.

One of my first credit repair tips in this article is, do not authorize people or companies to pull your credit report unless you have very good reason for doing so. If you are applying for credit, this is a good reason. This would include things like opening a credit card account applying for an auto loan or mortgage etc.

The information is needed for your creditor to make a decision and determine your interest rate.

Now-a-days you have to allow insurance companies to see your report before they give you a quote on auto insurance. How your credit score affects the way we drive is something I will never understand.

Let me tell you a little story. When I bought a house, my auto insurance went up on the next renewal period. Then??.. sorry, I got off topic. Ask me some time, I have a great experience on this one.

You need to be sure that whatever is on your report is 100% accurate. In the past, when I was in the mortgage business I saw hundreds of credit reports. I was shocked at how many mistakes they had on them.

Many times I found myself helping the customer get the mistakes corrected just so they could apply for a mortgage. It was a long drawn out process sometimes I must say.

So what if you get your free report and find mistakes on it?? You need to dispute these errors right away. The process of disputing errors is somewhat easy if you know how to do it.

Disputing and Correcting the Errors

First off, you need to know that under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) the reporting company and the information provider both have to be sure that everything is 100% correct. So let?s look at it this way for just a moment.

Let?s suppose you are the bank that gave you a mortgage. If the bank finds that you are making all of your payments on time and then reports to the credit reporting company that you missed a single payment, is that right?? Not really because you have made every payment and all of them have been on time.

You would need to get that error corrected since it will shows up on your report and cost you some points in your score. Let?s take this a step further, suppose the bank reports that you were always late on your payments. Now some people do not realize it but if you go past 30 days late, each time you do this it is reported to these reporting companies.

So if you know and can prove you have made all of your payments and have never been late, you want this corrected right away. When offering people credit repair tips, I urge everyone to not fall into the trap of thinking a grace period as something you should be using. A grace period is for the occasional time you may be a few days late, it is not a new due date for your payment. I know some people who use this falsely think it does not affect their credit. It does!

Once you get your free copy of your report and you find errors, there is a process you need to follow. Under the FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) you can insist on errors being corrected since this is a poor reflection on you.

Normally it is the information provider (like the example of the bank above) that causes the error. These companies are only reporting what the providers tell them. However they have an obligation to help you get things corrected if there are errors.

Credit Repair Tips ? Getting Started Disputing Errors

You need to write a letter to these credit bureaus about what you feel is not accurate on your credit report. Along with this letter you need to include copies (do not send originals) to back up what you are claiming to be the mistake. This gives proof that it is a mistake. Examples of this might be canceled checks, money order receipts, etc.

After providing your full name and current address you should make it clear what items on the report you are disputing. If there?s more than one mistake, spell them out one by one. You need to state all the facts and explain clearly why you have a dispute about the information. Then request that they remove it.

It?s a good practice to include a copy of your report and highlight or circle the item(s) in dispute. Be sure and send your letter by certified mail with a ?return receipt requested? since it?s amazing how people claim ?it must have gotten lost in the mail?. I?m sure you know what I mean here.

By sending your letter this way, you have proof of where it went and what companies you sent them too. You want to keep a separate file for each of the 3 credit bureaus you send them to. In each file be sure to keep a copy of the dispute letter and the proof you sent them. This way if you end up talking on the phone with them, you will be looking at the same thing they are.

Credit Repair Tips ? What Happens Now

Because of FCRA, the credit bureaus have to investigate the items you are questioning. This has to be done within 30 days unless they think your dispute is not valid. That?s why the copies of proof is advisable.

They will forward your information to the provider who appears to have made the mistake. This causes the information provider to have to look into it and try to figure out what went wrong. After their research, if they find an error on their part, they must provide the corrected information to all 3 credit bureaus so your credit report is accurate. Even if there is no error they still must report it to the credit bureaus and explain their position why they feel the disputed item is correct.

Credit Repair Tips ? Now What?

The credit bureaus now have to provide you an updated report (free of charge) that shows the corrections have been made. Once a disputed item is removed from your credit report, the bureaus cannot put it on your report again.

For this reason you want to be sure that at least once a year you take a look at your report. The first time you do this may be a little more work depending how many disputes you may find. It is well worth the time and effort since your credit score is affected and can cost you thousands of dollars in higher interest rates on car loans, mortgages and so much more.

Now I know I got a little long-winded here, but I really want you the consumer to know your rights under this Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and to use them to your advantage by using these credit repair tips.

Is it really easy to hack NASA computers?

A NASA official recently stated that a stolen laptop contained algorithms used to control the International Space Station. This incident is one of many breaches of NASA's security that have occurred over the past two years.

Speaking before Congress on Wednesday, NASA's Inspector General admitted that an unencrypted laptop that was stolen last year contained codes for controlling the International Space Station.

This isn't the first report of a NASA device, such as a cell phone or a laptop, being compromised. Between 2009 and 2011 the agency reported the loss or theft of 48 devices, some of which housed personal employee information along with proprietary technical details and important financial data.

Yet this is only a small part of a much larger problem that has been troubling NASA for the past two years.

Last week, the investigative panel of House Committee on Science, Space and Technology held a hearing to examine NASA's exposure to cyberattacks and information theft. In a written statement to the committee, NASA's Inspector General, Paul K. Martin, told the panel that between 2010 and 2011, "NASA reported 5,408 computer security incidents that resulted in the installation of malicious software on or unauthorized access to its systems."

It's difficult to measure NASA's data security problems against those of other federal agencies. "NASA OIG is the only Office of Inspector General that regularly conducts international network intrusion cases," read Martin's statement. "[T]his fact could skew perceptions with regard to NASA?s relative rate of significant intrusion events compared to other agencies."

NASA is taking steps to guard its data, a task that is not proving easy. Perhaps the most fundamental impediment to NASA's security upgrade is the sheer size of the agency. Information in NASA is constantly cycling around 550 individual networks that span the globe. Hundreds of thousands of people, including NASA personnel, contractors, academics, and members of the public access and communicate through these networks.

NASA spends over $1.5 billion on information technology each year, $58 million of which is allotted for security.

The official charged with overseeing the activity of these networks ? Chief Information Officer Linda Y. Curteon ? lacks access to key information about it. What's worse, when the CIO does identify a problem, she does not always have the proper authority to deal with it.

NASA currently monitors its networks with a "snap-shot" model, where updates on security are only given every so often, much like a baby monitor that broadcasts only for a few minutes each hour. The time between updates is a window of opportunity for potential hackers. For years, NASA has been trying to adopt a continuous security model.

The loss or theft of NASA's mobile devices would not be such a threat to security if the agency knew what sensitive information was stored on them, and that the devices were encrypted. During the hearing, Martin stated that 99% of these devices were not.

These many problems have rendered NASA vulnerable to much more serious threats, such as large-scale, sophisticated cyber-attacks.

"The individuals or nations behind these attacks are typically well organized and well funded and often target high profile organizations like NASA," Martin said. There were 47 such attacks on NASA in 2011, 13 of which were successful. During one attack, intruders acquired the credentials of 150 employees who had access to NASA's systems. In another, attackers, operating from a Chinese-based IP address, gained access to key systems of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and high-profile user accounts. "In other words," said Martin, "the attackers had full functional control over these networks."

NASA's internal investigations have suggested that the sophistication of cyber-attacks is increasing. Some have even involved large foreign companies and underground internet-service providers. The recent spate of thefts and intrusions seems to demonstrate that online criminals have begun to see NASA's vulnerabilities as opportunities.
